Good Morning!!!
Ahhh pay day, what better way to spend that check then to make a
donation to http://www.johnnymarathon.com/
Thank you for all of those that are part of my 2010 Boston Marathon
"Support Group". I believe we are less than 20 days from the bitter
sweet day, somewhere within 3 weeks. Who am I kidding; we are 18
days, 22 hours, 44 minutes and 3 seconds from the Big Day!!!!!!!!!
Monday April 19th at 10:00 am I will start the 2010 Boston Marathon
with Wave 1 and the Elite Runners! The anticipation is building, this
is like the holiday times, well this year this will be better then the
holidays. Go back to the day after Thanksgiving and from there you
have the 3 weeks of build up before the fat man in the red suit
resembling the birth of Christ comes and visits. Similar situation
for the Boston Marathon. Except we each turn into the fat man and
there is no religious interference except for passover sadder. This
past Saturday was "Charity Saturday" in Boston. I will attach a news
link from Boston.com. On this Saturday many of the runners get their
last "long run" in. "Long Runs" tend to be of 18 miles or more. We
do these long runs not for the distance but to build the endurance in
our legs and to have bodies get acclimated to "going" for 3-4 hours.
For many this was their last long run, for me, this was my first long
run. So back to the run. There are hundreds of runners that get
bused out to the start of the Marathon in Hopkinton, MA which is the
start of the Marathon and we run 21.7 miles back to Boston College.
Boston College is right after the race begins. I will get in to the
course description and Heart Break Hill in my next emails. But we
have an opportunity to conquer Heart Break hill and experience the
first 21+ miles of the course.

So at 2:45am on Saturday March 20th I left Markiewicz Compound in
Somers and made my trek up to Boston College. I had to be on a bus at
6:30 am which Joints In Motion provided for a small donation. We had
a gorgeous 24 degree day. I did not know what to expect from this run
regarding my knee. Was the knee going to hold up the entire distance?
Was the knee going to be in pain and cringe it out? How fast am I
going to run? Do I treat this like a long run or a tempo run? What
happens if I can't run? How far behind is the bus? If you think
those mental games are bad, wait until the actual race, I spend more
time thinking about the what ifs then what is actually going on. I
had a good chance to see many of my teammates who I haven't seen since
our drunken Harpoon 5 miler last summer and the Chatam Road Race. For
a better understanding and feeling of the event that took place last
weekend please click on the below link. And yes that is
JohnnyMarathon around the 1:47 mark finishing up and that is team mate
Lindsay screaming "Tapper" around the 2:10 mark.

So how did JohnnyMarathon do? I went the extra distance and ran 22
miles, with numerous stops to socialize with supporters and friends, I
felt great. No knee pains, well lets not say no knee pains, you are
going to definitely have some pains after 22 miles. My pace was a sub
9 minute mile; a galaxy away from my pace of a sub 7 minute mile in
Chicago for the first 20 miles. Myself and Dana Farber team mates
capped off the morning with some lunch and beers in Coolidge Corner.
After the "Holiday Season" sets in I headed back to Somers and
proceeded to take a 16 hour nap. The nap was more painful then the
run, try sleeping for 16 hours on a couch and then on the floor.
The pinnacle of any marathon training is the "tapper" after 12-16
weeks of intense training, you are suppose to take it easy with 2-3
weeks to go. Unfortunately for me, I have no training to tapper from.
I am already missing "it". As marathon runners, many of us suffer
from post marathon depression. True story! I am already feeling the
"depression" just knowing that there is no "next" marathon in the
foreseeable future. At lunch on Saturday I was talking with Lindsay's
"mini-me". She was so excited to be running her first marathon and
how she wants to keep running marathons. I remember not long ago I
had the same desire and outlook; it hasn't changed it has only grown
with more passion and respect. It is bitter sweet that in order to
run "forever" i need to take a break for now. But I am planning a
Fall/Winter that only I would dream of!!! There is some "Iron" and
some "Thai" planned!!! More details on my comeback to come.
I have recently discovered acupuncture. I went for a message and
wound up getting 12 needles rigged into my knee with some intense
electricity shooting through them. I do have to say my knee felt
drastically better for almost a week afterwards and that was including
the 22 mile run. It is definitely something I will continue to pursue
until we find a cause for the pain in my knee or until I have surgery.
While Gary, the acupuncturist, was piercing these needles into my
knee anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep I was curious to what exactly
acupuncture does. I still do not have a good understanding but there
was that word Chi again. Through my readings, yoga practices, and now
self medication this word "Chi" keeps coming about. With all of this
down time coming up, I am interested in exploring how to utilize this
"Chi" thing.
So the important stuff. Why haven't you donated yet? Do you have
some type of Cancer shield that you and all of your loved ones are
able to protect yourself with? Bullshit, your just being cheap.
http://www.johnnymarathon.com/
Its pretty simple, donate some money, help fund cancer research and if
and when you or a loved one gets sick by the largest killer the human
species has come face to face with you have a higher likelihood of
being treated. Need it any simpler? I know we are not all dealing
with my level of education but that is pretty simple.
Some more reasons "Why" Dana Farber:
- Offered free financial coaching services- one of the first such
programs in the U.S.- to help patients and families manage the
economic repercussions associated with cancer treatment
- Launched a Spanish website to provide Spanish-speaking patients
with information on DFCI's cutting-edge cancer research and care
- Earned "Magnet" status- the highest award granted internationally
for nursing excellence within a health care institution- for the 2nd
time with only 6% of hospitals worldwide holding this accreditation
- Named one of only 10 charities nationally with the most consecutive
4-star ratings- the highest ranking- by Charity Navigator, America's
largest independent evaluator of non-profit organizations,
demonstrating our ongoing commitment to prudent financial management
and low cost-of-funds raised
We are less then 3 weeks from the "Day" and we are only $2000 from my
commitment to Dana Faber. Please support the JohnnyMarathon campaign
at http://www.johnnymarathon.com/
I look forward to keeping y'all up to date over the next most exciting
and culminating three weeks Please donate!
