The definitions:
Dana Farber Cancer Institute: Founded in 1947, Dana-Farber has been committed to providing adults and children with cancer with the best treatment available today while developing tomorrow's cures through cutting-edge research. Located in Boston Massachusetts.
Claudia Adams Barr Program: Widely recognized as one of the largest and most successful programs of its kind. Based on a rigorous and highly selective process the Barr Program funds the brightest, most creative, scientist making basic research discoveries that are transforming cancer treatment. Barr Investigators have made numerous major breakthroughs resulting in improved survival rates and quality of life for thousands of patients everywhere.
For example, the Barr Program is making a huge difference for large numbers of lung cancer patients. A team of Barr Investigators discovered specific mutations that led to the successful use of new drugs and increased survival for 10 to 20 percent of lung cancer patients worldwide. Previously, these patients’ cancers were largely untreatable.
The Yawkey Center: Opened in January 2011, rising 14 stories above Brookline Avenue, the Yawkey Center for Cancer Care embodies one of the hallmarks of Dana-Farber: an unwavering commitment to innovation and discovery, and compassionate care. Created with guidance from many of our patients and families, it was built to advance clinical care, optimize patient safety, enhance the patient experience, and provide a welcome and nurturing environment.
Dana Farber Marathon Challenge: A team created of 550 teammates with a mission to raise $4.8 million for Barr Program research. Through fundraising efforts focused on the Boston Marathon their ultimate finish line: a world without cancer.
Marathon: A long-distance running race, strictly one of 26 miles and 385 yards
Boston Marathon: A historic marathon held on the 3rd Monday in April known as Patriots Day. The jewel of the 5 marathons considered the World Marathon Majors. The marathon consists of around 25,000 runners. Many of them are charity runners but 7-9K runners registered under the strictest qualifications based on sex and age groups. This is known to runners as the elusive “Boston Qualifier” or “BQ”.
Ironman: A long distance triathlon consisting of a 2.4 mile swim, followed by 112 miles on a bike and finishing with a full marathon of 26.2 miles. Ironman Triathlon became known for its grueling length, harsh race conditions, and television coverage. Ironman World Championship is held every year in Kona Hawaii. An event known as the ultimate endurance race.
Ironman Texas: In its second year held on Saturday March 19th 2012 in the Woodlands section of Texas. Woodlands is approximately 40 minutes outside Houston Texas. In its first year athletes were faced with extreme temperatures reaching almost 90 degrees.
JohnnyMarathon: A fictional character created by John Markiewicz, in 2008, as a tool to tell a story of heroism in an attempt to raise money for Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Primarily used around the training regime of the Boston Marathon. In 2011 JohnnyMarathon was used during the “Boston to Big Sur” campaign where John Markiewicz ran 2 marathons on 2 coast in 2 weeks. In 2012 JohnnyMarathon will be used to capitalize on a 5 year campaign to raise $30,000 for the Claudia Adams Barr Program through running the Boston Marathon and than 4 weeks later competing in Ironman Texas.
To Date: In the 4 previous years the JohnnyMarathon campaign has raised over $24,000 for the Claudia Adams Barr Program.
The Goal: In year 5, 2012, to surpass the $30,000 fundraising mark for the Claudia Adams Barr program.

God: The Being perfect in power, wisdom, and goodness who is worshipped as creator and ruler of the universe. A being or object believed to have more than natural attributes and powers and to require human worship
John Markiewicz: Arrogant, humbled, the inspirer of the uninspired, unselfish. The Being who the character JohnnyMarathon is based on.
