I have been dealing with a lot lately - a layoff, the subsequent job search, some personal things and this ever-lasting head/chest cold...so the reminder to smile today is beyond welcomed and I am going to think of all the things that make me smile daily, and have made me smile bigger than words in the past.
Things like finishing my first marathon (and hoping not last), which Julia reminded me of this morning...
In the spirit of smiling and having fun...I have also signed up for Amanda's new 30-day challenge, to have FUN
So I am going to remember to smile, laugh and just have fun - because there will always be challenges and negativity, but the strong persevere and overcome to find the light.

Healthy Soups, Luna Fun, and Getting Back into Shape!

Ok, so the head/chest cold is subsiding (thanks to a Z*pack and some meds to help me sleep through the night without leaving both lungs on the floor) and I'm starting to get some more energy lasting throughout the day, and motivation to expend that energy in more active ways (lifting the remote and mug of tea is no longer on my sufficient exercise list). I have been experimenting with some barre classes lately (which I don't think are exactly my thing, but they definitely get me doing more squats and core work), got in a semi-long run, and have been looking daily for new gym classes to explore.
I have also been trying to figure out ways to cook using only the items in my pantry (which are plentiful, believe me) and the produce I am getting in my Boston Organics box, especially since I will be leaving on a work/fun vacation this weekend (more on that below) and want to use as much of the goodies as possible - seriously hate wasting food!
Which brings me to my three things Thursday....
1. Healthy Soups: In an attempt to use the pile of organic yellow onions growing by the week, and my most recent delivery of organic sweet potatoes and apples, I decided to make myself some sweet potato/apple soup. I looked at a few recipes online, but wasn't in the mood for a big elaborate recipe, so I just winged it!!
Curry Sweet Potato & Apple Soup (vegetarian, vegan)
Serves: 2 (dinner) 4 (starter or side)
I topped mine with some organic pea shoots (also from my produce box) that I sauteed in garlic and olive oil for about 5 - 8 minutes.
2. Luna fun: Tomorrow morning I will be flying out to California for the annual Luna Chix Summit, our in Berkeley, CA (closer to Clifbar headquarters than San Francisco). Last year was my first experience with this event (and with the team!), and I couldn't believe how much fun this was, how well run it was, and how much Clifbar & Co. care about their employees, athletes, and consumers!
Summit is made up of two and half days of fun, activities, clinics, good food, and lots of Luna products :) It is a time when we get to meet the other Luna Chix teams from across the country and sports (Luna supports not only Run teams, but also Mountain Bike and Tri teams). As a member of a Run Team, I will be getting in a lot of info on run form, running nutrition, as well as some speed workouts on the track and longer run through Berkeley on Sunday before summit ends.
Last year I was able to meet so many incredible women, including the Luna Chix Pro-athletes, pick up some valuable nutrition information to keep my energy stable and efficient, and hear the stories about how the The Breast Cancer Fund is impacting lives and cancer prevention research.
I cannot wait for tomorrow morning to get here - as this year I won't only be enjoying all of the above, but I will also be picking up a special session that has to pertain with my role on the Boston Luna Chix Run team this season (I will explain next week, but I am very excited about this opportunity and it is right up my ally in terms of passion and interest - it also might be helpful for some of you guys too!).
On Sunday, Jessie, Ashley, Julia and I will head to Sonoma for a phenomenal wine tasting experience, then head back to San Fran for some sight seeing before catching a red-eye home Tuesday night - so incredibly excited!! Work Hard, Play Hard - am I right?!
3. Getting Back into Shape: Something I didn't think I would have to say I was doing after my last knee injury this past fall/winter, but I have taken a big endurance/energy hit with my wrist injury (no upper body work for a month), layoff fogginess, that then was replaced by a head/chest cold. My typical paces have been a struggle to maintain, and my perception of distance while running has greatly altered (5 miles feels like a mini-marathon). I have to take more breathers and stretch breaks while running shorter distances, which can really deflate your running mojo.
This week I did a lot of reflection on this, and realize that two weeks of sniffling and coughing can really do a number on your breathing and ability to stabilize heart-rate during workouts - I know this is not my fault, and it is not permanent. I will get back into shape, it just might be a little slower than intended. My hip has been giving me some pain, but I know it is because I am trying to interlace increased strength training with increased running too quickly after a period of less activity, so I am resting and taking care of it - stopping when I need to. I am becoming a smarter athlete, which I intend to use to my advantage while getting my mileage back up, my paces back up, and my mental well-being back up.
I have nothing that I am actively training for, so I need to let go of my competitive mentality just a little for right now, and accept where I am at, and reach for where I want to be. I will enjoy my running for fun with friends or on my own, I will push it where I know I can push it (and where it doesn't hurt my legs or breathing) and my fitness will return, as long as I continue to have faith in that.
---------------------------------------------------------------------What's your favorite soup combo?
I have enjoyed most soup combos I have come across to be honest - I really love a flavorful lentil or butternut squash though :)
Any idea what I will be learning at summit that has me so excited?!

- 1 T coconut oil
- 1 small/medium yellow onion (sliced thinly)
- 1/2 tsp. curry powder
- 1 dash salt
- 2 tsp. cinnamon (plus dash to garnish)
- 1 Large sweet potato
- 1 medium/large apple (I used organic empire)
- 1/2 15-oz. can chickpeas (rinsed)
- 3/4 quart of veggies or chicken broth (I used organic chicken broth because that is what I had open)
- optional: 1/4 cup nutritional yeast

Fitness Friday: Spatula Runners 10K
To contact us Click HERE
So like most things in life, I waited until the last minute to enter my time and photo into Ali's Spatula Runners 10k, and seeing as I am just getting over this cold, and it is blowing 18 mph w/ 38 degree weather, I opted for the treadmill.
Now I almost always am slower on the treadmill, but add on the fact that I haven't comfortably run faster than an 8:20 in the past month anyways, and you could imagine the pain, fatigue and accelerated heart rate I battled to get through this.
I could harp on the fact that I really didn't feel strong and that it was my all time slowest 10k race (whether or not it was in real life or online), but instead I am going to smile and perhaps do a spatula fist pump, just for getting through this.
I ran a 0.55 mile warm up in about 5 minutes, did a quick stretch (my right hip and knee have been sore as heck lately) and got right to it. There was a yoga class at 6:30 that I wanted to make it to, and knew I had to be speedy to get it done in time. I put the treadmill at a 0.7% incline (which equals a flat road) and pumped the speed to 7.4 (which is usually my recovery pace for intervals!) and settled in. The plan was to raise that speed every half mile - mile, but it took the first mile to get comfortable enough to up it to 7.5. I hung out at 7.5 for the next 2.2 miles, and knew I had three more miles to get through. I was hurting and it was tough breathing. I was dripping sweat and could feel myself over-heating, but I kept on going.
At about 4 miles, I seriously considered stopping at 5.65 miles and just tacking on my warm up time to make the 6.2 miles, but I knew that was cheating/easy way out - so I quickly squashed that thought. I did, however, turn the speed down to 7.3 - and was still struggling. I turned the machine up to 7.6 as I closed in on 5 miles and told myself I was going to really push myself to speed up and finish strong.
I upped it again to 7.8 at about the 5.5 mile mark, and was sure I would be able to make it all the way to 6.2, but my legs had other plans and I had to knock the speed back down to a 7.3 to finish up 6 miles, I pumped it back up to 7.8 and sprinted in (my sprint is usually a 9.5 on the tready!) the final 0.2. I finished up the 10K in a 50:45 and a smile for pushing through despite some set backs.
I walked the final .25 cool down, and finished the evening with a perfect 7 miles and still made it to the yoga class without being obnoxiously late, score! The whole time I was running and yoga-ing, I was thinking about this Cinnabon Cake I wanted to make for Tripp, since he is going to be coming home while I am flying out so I won't be able to see him for another week, and he finished his final day (of 12 weeks!) in Oregon today - so I wanted to leave him something special.
I also thought, what better way to get my photo in for Ali's Spatula Runners Photo contest!
There will be no write up on the final product, because needless to say - I screwed it up somehow! There were two and a half sticks of butter and 3 cups of sugar, so maybe it is better it came out crappy? I still tried to eat some of it that was dripping in the excess butter...it was seriously a pool of buttery oil on the top layer, nothing like the delicious looking pick on the site - wonder what went wrong?
---------------------------------------------------------------Did you take part in Ali's contest? It ends today, but she has some pretty great prizes up for grabs!!

Luna Chix Summit 2012
To contact us Click HERE
Hey hey! Did you miss me? I have been go, go, going on fast forward since last Friday, and I can't wait to share my amazing weekend with you! It will take a couple of posts, so just bare with me :)
Friday morning I flew out to San Francisco bright and early, en route to Berkeley for the 2012 Team Luna Chix Summit. I had never really been to Berkeley, so I was excited to see a new area, and even more ecstatic to see some faces I hadn't seen in a year, and to meet so many new ones!! Luna Chix Summit is a great way to jump-start our season (all run, mountain bike, cycling and triathlon teams are invited) - trying newer products, getting our team uniforms (first run skirt ever!), and learning about what Clifbar & Co. is doing today and has planned for the coming year, as well as what the company we support has been doing, the Breast Cancer Fund.
I met Julia at Logan airport and arrived at SFO without a hitch. We jumped in a rental and were in Berkeley by 3 PM, just in time to check in, meet up with J and Ashley, and pop down to my first session - Nutrition Ambassador Training. That is correct, I will be the nutrition ambassador for the Luna Chix Boston Run Team this season (that was the big news I had to share - and if have been around me much, you know I live for this stuff!) It was a great session - not too much new information (I had received a lot of bar nutrition info at last year's summit) but still some good refreshers and great info! I will write a nutrition specific post later on and share what I learned.
That evening, Clif & Co. hosted us all for dinner and tours at their Emeryville headquarters. Our shuttle bus was a little late getting there, so we were some of the last to get dinner and I didn't get a chance to take a tour - but the food was worth every second and I had already seen the tour last year, so I don't think I missed much. They really go all out on the food at Cliff HQ, making it that much more desirable to work there (it is no secret that I would love to work for this company - their values, benefits and attitude sell it all). Gary, the co-owner of Clif & Co. led the Cliff & Co. band as our entertainment, and we were introduced to this year's Luna Pro Team (mainly cyclo-cross and tri members - but there is one running pro, Jane Kibii, who I ran the 2011 Tufts 10k with last fall). One of the cool things about summit, is that we get to intermingle with the Pros and ask lots of good questions.
We didn't stay long after dinner and the entertainment, as we were tired and had an early morning of workouts and good info to look forward to - the only problem was that we woke up to monsoonish rain/winds on Saturday morning. This caused our pre-run clinic (all about running coaches and different types of workouts, along with some dynamic stretches) to be inside in a conference room, which I wasn't complaining about as I watched the sideways rain. We eventually packed on our rain gear and headed out around the marina we were staying at, for a 1.5 mile warm-up, and then about 3.5 miles of tempo runs - one of my favorite out of all of the different kinds of speed workouts. The workout was pretty cool, and definitely one I will be repeating on my own to get in some speed work!!
It looked like this:
Dinner was a yummy buffet, some Clif & Co, wine, and a performance by a local improv comedy group. Each skit they invited someone from the audience to come up on stage and act a part - in return whoever acted received some Luna sportsgear arm warmers. I was called up for a skit where you line up, the host asks a question and starting with the end person, each person in line adds one word to the answer, and so on...I scored some sweet arm warmers, that I might have to try out soon - not used to the feel of them just yet!
Sunday was our last day of summit, and the only big thing on everyone's schedule was either a ride (for the cyclists and mountain bikers) or a run (for the run teams) and an option to do yoga early in the AM (I partook in the 7 AM class, pre-run). Between the three choices for the run (short & easy, long & flat and hard & hilly), I chose the hard & hilly. Last year we were brought out to the Marin Headlands and it was an absolutely incredible run - hard, but rewarding. This run on Sunday was just as rewarding, if not more! We ran about 7.5 miles through the Strawberry Canyon (located on UC Berkeley's campus), and it was hilly and a bit muddy - but worth every second. I had to walk up two of the three steep parts (the first half was all uphill, but there were 3 "shelves" of steep inclines to tackle in that uphill trek). I made it through with one of the front groups, so I had time to make it all the way to the top and then descend back to where we started, with about a 9:27 pace - not too shabby for walking up some portions and trying not to slip in the muddy areas! A little upset I didn't get any photos, but I am keeping an eye out for any that might have been taken to share!!
After spending far too long in the shower trying to scrub the caked on mud off my calves and kinvaras, I met up with the other ladies of my team, enjoyed our final lunch of summit, claimed some more Luna and Clif bars to add to our stash, and packed up to head to Santa Rosa for some wine time!
Next up...wine country with the girls...

Wine Country...my kind of place

Hi everyone! Hope you are having a fantastic week! I know I have been pleasantly busy, with the Easter holiday, staying home for a couple days with the family and getting back into the swing of things here in Boston - so without further ado...I give you the final piece of our trip to California, wine country tour of Santa Rosa!
Let's see where I left off...oh yes, we were just getting on our way North from Berkeley to Santa Rosa, to check into our next hotel and explore a bit of wine country on the way. We stayed at the Hilton Sonoma County and it was a pretty little place, with an outdoor heated pool and hot tub, which as soon as we were done putting our bags down, we were jumping into. It was a pretty full day, what with the 7.5 mile trail run, closing of summit, and drive north - so the pool and hot tub was a great way to unwind and lounge out a bit.
We started our time in Sonoma County out right, with a trip to Glen Ellen Inn for dinner and our first taste of CA wine (of the trip of course). The dinner was top notch, the Inn was cozy and the service was great...oh and the cocktails and wine weren't too bad either.
We ordered the mussels as an app, which wasn't a huge portion, but a great taster...and coupled with the homemade foccaccia bread and scones, it was the perfect starter. J and I ordered the Italian fish stew, which was top notch, and well presented as a plus.
After some great martinis, food, and a bottle of wine, we were pretty full and satisfied, but the desserts were too irresistible to try so we shared a little mix (homemade truffles, caramel popcorn ice-cream sundae, and tiramisu!).
After dinner we headed back to the hotel for some de-briefing of the weekend and another bottle of red wine as a night cap (hey, with four girls, a bottle doesn't last too long!) and then it was off to bed for an early wake up and wine tour!
Monday morning we met up with Ken, from Platypus Wine Tours, at our hotel to start our expedition through Santa Rosa (Dry Creek Valley) wine country - mainly private estate tours in this part of the region. I have used Platypus before, for a wine tour of Sonoma County and had an absolutely phenomenal time, so I convinced the ladies to book them again. Ken had prepared us a picnic lunch and a cooler of water for our trip, and we left the hotel with his words of wisdom "it's ok to not finish every glass, or else you are going to be hammered, so remember to PACE yourself" - see wine touring is kind of like running a marathon - it can take 4 or 5 hours to conquer miles of terrain and carbs.
First stop, Harvest Moon Vineyard. We paired each wine with a different cheese or chocolate, and the favorite for me was the Dry Sparkling Gewürztraminer paired with the manchego cheese, but I unfortunately did not snag a bottle. I wanted to pace my bottle purchases so I didn't end up with half of wine country and no way to get it all home! The woman helping us with the tasting was fun and laid back, we didn't feel like we were being ignorant or wine-snobbed out, which was comforting, since none of us know a whole lot about the complexity of each wine...we just wanted to see what we could learn, taste some good wine, and have some fun (not to spoil the story, but mission accomplished...)
Next up, Hook n Ladder Winery, right next door to Harvest Moon. This was a nifty barn full of wine barrels and old firemen T-shirts left as memories of the firemen from all over the country who have come to visit this winery. We spotted the Boston shirt right away, but were more interested in getting our second tasting of the day in and taking pics with the towering pile of barrels. I had some success here though, and brought home a great Cabernet mix, The Tillerman.
Third stop = lunch stop. Ken had set it up so that were picnic lunching during our time at the third estate vineyard, Foppoli. Foppoli is a not a wide-spread wine to the best of my knowledge, but the retail production was started a few years ago by one of the younger sons in the family in his young 20's (he is still 29, or at least that is what he told us). So while we dined on turkey sandwiches and brownies, Dominic (the young owner), told us the history of his family's involvement with wine making, which dated back much further into northern Italy, and then in CA around the time of prohibition, to selling their grapes to other vineyards in the area instead of making their own wine, all the way to him re-starting the wine making process in 2005.
His grapes grow on this really pretty and expansive farm, with cows, donkeys, roosters, the whole nine yards! I picked up a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc here, but I am not going to lie, Dominic was not my favorite person on this trip - he was pretty full of himself and very "markety" if that makes sense, but we somehow managed to agree to meet back up with him later in the evening to show us the area and where we should go for dinner - but more on that later. After many stories and way too much time spent at "lunch" we had burned through our time allotted to the fourth winery (we were supposed to go to 5, and only made it to 4) and had to go straight to the final estate, La Czar Vineyards.
At La Czar, I would say the views were the main draw. The wine was alright (not the best we had tasted, but it was also the fourth tasting and we had a bit of wine at the other estates), but he is closing his production so he can move south (Hawaii - tough life) so he offered us 50% off if we bought four bottles. I had only bought 2 bottles up to this point, and the price of 4 w/ the discount was too good to beat, so I picked up 2 cabs, 1 zinfandel - maple vineyard (that was pretty darn fantastic) and a Sauvignon Blanc.
After La Czar we were all pretty tipsy and beat, so we headed back to the hotel, bid farewell to Ken and decided to rest a little. After some coffee and showers, we were ready to get some dinner and headed out to meet up with Dominic to get some dinner in Healdsburg....everything post this was pretty fun, but also a slight crash n burn....we continued to drink at dinner, a few too many glasses of wine, a very small, but yummy portion of dinner and then...well the night went on a little longer than it needed to, but it was all good fun, so the hangover the next day was well worth it!
The next day was our last, so we headed back to San Francisco, where we were flying out of...on the way we explored the gorgeous Marin Headlands, some breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge, and walked around Fisherman's Pier like true tourists! After a very full and tiring week, we flew out to Boston on the red-eye and never looked back...well maybe a little, but check out these pics and you will see why!
And that my friends, was my Cali trip in a nutshell! Thank you Luna and Clifbar & Co. for bringing us out there for three days of fun-filled activities and info, and thank you northern California wineries for making such yummy beverages and scenic drives :)
---------------------------------------------------------------------Do you drink wine? Have you ever been on a tour?
Are you a red or white kind of person?
all the time, I am a red person, but I do enjoy a nice chilled prosecco or suavignon blanc in the summer months.
The owner's backyard view at La Czar...not too shabby! |
Final shot I had of the night, at Bear Republic Brewery for pre-dinner beers - I enjoyed a Racer 5 pint...mmmm |
J and I with the view of the bridge |
Ashley and Julia at the top of one of the Marin Headlands hills |
On top of the world! |
And of course the Sea Lions at Fisherman'd Wharf, no trip to San Fran would be complete without this picture! |

Outfit Details: Sunnies: Ray-Ban (Hubby's); Dress: Forever 21; Belt: The Limited; Clutch: Thrifted; Bracelets: In Pink, American Eagle; Sandals: Forever 21
A couple of weeks ago, I was stalking my Twitter feed when I saw that the Fairmont Copley Hotel had tweeted that Matt Nathanson, one of my absolute favorite musicians, would be playing a free concert in the hotel's Oval Room on June 15th. All I had to do was send an e-mail to reserve my spot, which I promptly did. So last Friday, I, along with my hubby, sister, and sister's boyfriend, got all dolled up & headed to Fairmont Copley for the evening.
It was my first time there, so upon my arrival I spent a little while exploring. It is an overwhelmingly beautiful place. I'm sure my photos don't do it justice, but I hope you get an idea of just how incredible it is.
The event, held in the hotel's Oval Room, was small & intimate, a nice change from the normal concert setting. Guests sat at tables, each of which had a great view of the stage.
I had seen Matt Nathanson in concert once before, and, again, he put on an amazing, acoustic show. Matt is a great live performer, and he is also absolutely hilarious - a very entertaining combination. Even the boys enjoyed themselves!

Foodie Friday: Peasant Salad

As the temperatures rise (we're going on day #3 above 90 degrees here in Boston), I've been looking for recipes that are both light & substantive - a difficult task, sometimes - for lunches & dinners. When making lunches, I also must consider how well the meal will travel, as I often pack my lunch & eat it at work several hours later. This makeshift Peasant Salad satisfies all the above criteria. And it's tasty too!
Here's what you'll need (quantities will vary depending on how large of a salad you're making, so I'm leaving it open-ended):
Cucumber slices
Green & yellow zucchini slices
Red, yellow, and green pepper slices
Tomato chunks
Low-fat feta cheese
For dressing: Mix a 2:1 combination of lemon juice & olive oil

I know, I know. According to all the rules of fashion, I should have belted this dress. It's a bit big & shapeless on me, and, as a result, it's not nearly as flattering as it could have been had I defined my waist. That being said, I eschewed the rules & opted instead to wear the dress as is - big, flowy, and super comfy. It was the perfect outfit to accomplish my objectives for that Friday afternoon: sitting outside for hours, getting slightly tipsy on sangria, and catching up with my dear friend Ally.

Answer:-Very few "regular" people can attend. it's fashion-world people, and celebrity guests.
There is an auction coming up next week at the Columbus College of Art and Design - they're selling off two tickets to the highest bidder at their Senior Fashion Show May 13th.
http://www.ccad.edu/blog/2011/02/ccad-to-auction-coveted-victoria%E2%80%99s-secret-fashion-show-tickets/
You best chance might be to go to that, and bid. It'll cost more than the Super Bowl, most likely - partly because the fashion show doesn't take place in a stadium that holds hundreds of thousands. - Question:-Damn, I missed the Victoria Secret Fashion Show. Where can i watch a re run?
