So last year I thought it was a great idea to start of the campaign with some basic definitions so we are all on the same boat, so here we go again.
The Definitions:
Dana Farber Cancer Institute: Founded in 1947, Dana-Farber has been committed to providing adults and children with cancer with the best treatment available today while developing tomorrow's cures through cutting-edge research. Located in Boston Massachusetts
Claudia Adams Barr Program: Widely recognized as one of the largest and most successful programs of its kind.  Based on a rigorous and highly selective process the Barr Program funds the brightest, most creative, scientist making basic research discoveries that are transforming cancer treatment.  Barr Investigators have made numerous major breakthroughs resulting in improved survival rates and quality of life for thousands of patients everywhere.For example, the Barr Program is making a huge difference for large numbers of lung cancer patients.  A team of Barr Investigators discovered specific mutations that led to the successful use of new drugs and increased survival for 10 to 20 percent of lung cancer patients worldwide.  Previously these patients’ cancers were largely untreatable.
The Yawkey Center: Opened in January of 2011, rising 14 stories above Brookline Avenue, the Yawkey Center for Cancer Care embodies one of the hallmarks of Dana-Farber: an unwavering commitment to innovation and discovery, and compassionate care.  Created with guidance from many of our patients and families, it was built to advance clinical care, optimize patient safety, enhance the patient experience, and provide a welcome and nurturing environment.Dana Farber Marathon Challenge:  A team created of 550 teammates with a mission to raise $4.8 million for Barr Program research.  Through fundraising efforts focused on the Boston Marathon their ultimate finish line: a world without cancer.Marathon: A long-distance running race, strictly one of 26 miles and 385 yardsBoston Marathon: A historic marathon held on the 3^rd Monday in April known as Patriots Day.  The jewel of the 5 marathons considered the World Marathon Majors.  The marathon consists of around 25,000 runners.  Many of them are charity runners but 7-9K runners registered under the strictest qualifications based on sex and age groups.  This is known to runners as the elusive “Boston Qualifier” or “BQ”.JohnnyMarathon: A fictional character created by John Markiewicz as a tool to tell a story of heroism in an attempt to raise money for Dana Farber Cancer Institute.  Primarily used around the training regime of the Boston Marathon.  In 2011 JohnnyMarathon was used during the “Boston to Big Sur” campaign where John ran 2 marathons on 2 coasts in 2 weeks.  In 2012 JohnnyMarathon was used to capitalize on a 5-year goal to raise $30,000 for the Claudia Adams Barr Program through running the Boston Marathon and than 4 weeks later competing in Ironman Texas.  To Date: In the 5 previous years the JohnnyMarathon campaign has raised over $31,000 for the Claudia Adams Barr Program.The Goal: In year 6, 2013, to surpass the $35,000 fundraising mark, by raising over $8,000 for the Claudia Adams Barr program.Support Group: YouHero: A person, typically a man, who is admired for courage or noble qualities.Legend: a narrative of human actions that are perceived both by teller and listeners to take place within human history and to possess certain qualities that give the tale verisimilitude. Legend, for its active and passive participants includes no happenings that are outside the realm of "possibility", defined by a highly flexible set of parameters, which may include miracles that are perceived as actually having happened, within the specific tradition of indoctrination where the legend arises, and within which it may be transformed over time, in order to keep it fresh and vital, and realistic. A majority of legends operate within the realm of uncertainty, never being entirely believed by the participants, but also never being resolutely doubted.
